Ideal Aftercare Following a Tooth Extraction

Having a tooth extracted can feel a little overwhelming, but the good news is that most patients heal quickly and comfortably when they follow the right aftercare instructions. Taking proper care of the extraction site is one of the best ways to reduce discomfort, prevent complications, and support healthy healing. Here are some important tips to help you recover after a tooth extraction.

Protect the Blood Clot

After your extraction, a blood clot will form in the empty socket. This clot plays a vital role in the healing process by protecting the underlying bone and nerves. It’s important to avoid anything that could dislodge the clot.

For the first 24 hours, do not use straws, smoke, vape, spit forcefully, or rinse vigorously. These actions can create suction that may remove the clot and lead to a painful condition known as dry socket.

Manage Bleeding and Swelling

Some minor bleeding and oozing are normal during the first several hours after your procedure. Bite gently on the gauze your dentist provided and change it as instructed. If bleeding continues, a damp tea bag may help promote clotting.

Swelling is also common, especially during the first 48 hours. Applying an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes at a time can help minimize swelling and provide comfort.

Eat Soft, Nutritious Foods

Choosing the right foods can make recovery easier and help prevent irritation at the extraction site. During the first few days, stick to soft foods such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Smooth soups
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Oatmeal

Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hard foods that could disturb the healing area. Be sure to stay hydrated, but skip alcoholic beverages and avoid drinking through a straw.

Keep the Area Clean

Good oral hygiene is essential for preventing infection. Continue brushing and flossing the rest of your teeth, but be gentle around the extraction site. After the first 24 hours, you may rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water several times a day, especially after meals. This helps keep the area clean and supports healing without disrupting the blood clot.

Take Medications as Directed

If your dentist recommends pain medication or prescribes antibiotics, take them exactly as instructed. Most patients find that discomfort gradually improves within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers may also help, depending on your dentist’s recommendations.
